THE HERITAGE QUILT

The idea for this quilt was conceived in 1997 by Rev Dr Geoff Pound who was the Convener of the Heritage Working group at Whitley College (the Baptist College of Victoria).

Sandra Thwaites took up the idea and saw it through to completion. At the Beginning of 1999 each Baptist Union or Baptist Convention was sent a square of home-spun fabric and was invited to sew the name of their Union or Convention on it and to decorate it with symbols and colours representing their country, culture or God's creation. The result is this exciting Internationally flavoured quilt.

A team of enthusiastic quilters spent several days sewing the patches together. The central Congress motif was stitched by Fay Butler and the Baptist World Alliance block was made by Lexi Larkin. Lyn Flavel and Jo Linley helped with construction and Debbie O'Brien coordinated and watched over the project, completing boarders and binding.

The completed quilt symbolizes the coming together of Baptists from around the world and represents the unity of Baptists.

The Quilt will eventually hang in the new Australian Baptist Heritage and Learning Centre, planned for Whitley College."
