The Baptist
Archives Queensland is the central repository for the historical records of the
Baptist Union of
Functions
1. To collect and store the historical records
of the Baptist Union of Queensland, its departments, committees, divisions and
agencies and where possible and necessary those of its member churches
2. To conserve, preserve, classify and index
these records as far as possible according to professional standards
3. To make the records readily available for
bona fide researchers
4. To promote the value of historical records
and to educate the Baptist constituency in their use
Access: during normal office hours, by appointment.
Material is not on open access but must be handled by Archivist.
Policies on access: Records are generally available to bona fide
researchers; access is at the discretion of the Archivist. Appointments are
necessary and should be made initially by letter, preferably. Most material is accessible, although
restrictions apply to sensitive and
recent records, personal papers and to older fragile material. Written
application must be made for use of material in commercial works. Due
acknowledgment of all material used must be made in the form, Used with permission of Baptist Archives,

Fees: No set fees are levied except for commercial
work and extensive searches, but donations towards the upkeep and development
of the Archives are requested. Out of pocket expenses for postage, phone calls
and photocopying etc., will be charged.
Indexing: Most material has been broadly classified and
is indexed on a computerised system. Computerised church membership figures and
growth patterns are also available on request. Depending upon the amount and
type of information needed, a donation may be requested for access to this
service.

The Baptist
Heritage Qld (Historical Society of Queensland BHQ) is a voluntary society
operating within the Baptist denomination in Queensland with membership open to
individuals, families, organizations and churches for the purpose of fostering
historical awareness, research, publication, and preservation of records
relating to Baptist life and witness within the state and elsewhere
Objectives
1. To encourage research into the history of
Baptists, especially those in
2. To encourage the preservation of important
Baptist records
3. To encourage the collating and recording of
Baptist history
4. To foster interest in Baptist history at the
local church level
5. To assist research students at schools,
colleges and universities
6. To publish articles and historical
information
7. To be alert to church jubilees, centenaries
and other significant anniversaries for Baptists and where possible, assist in
the provision of relevant historical details
8. To promote care of buildings and sites of
historical interest to Baptists

Churches -
hold their own records; churches of historical importance include City Tabernacle,
Ipswich , Maryborough, Rockhampton, South Brisbane Vulture Street, Toowoomba (records of some of these churches
are available on microfiche at Baptist Archives, Queensland.
Departments of the Baptist Union hold many of their own records. In particular,
the Baptist Union Community Services and
Baptist Camping Ministries control large organizations and considerable
property. Some District Associations control camping properties

The library specialises in
Queensland history and holds annual reports, yearbooks, handbooks, histories of
local churches etc, some of which are not held elsewhere. Manuscript collection
includes sermons of Rev. B.G. Wilson and diaries and photographs by Rev. W.
Higlett.
Mitchell Library, Sydney - contains some items relating to Queensland history including The Queensland Freeman/Baptist
(1881-1911 vol 1 no 1- vol 30 no 12) (see NSW entry for details of this
library.)
